Gavin Tonge claimed a career-best haul but it could not prevent a second-string West Indies side from losing their opening Champions Trophy match against Pakistan at the Wanderers in South Africa today.

After bowling out West Indies for 133 inside 35 overs, Pakistan sealed the first Group ‘A’ result in 31 overs at 134 for 5.

Tonge ended with four wickets for 25 runs from his allotted 10 overs, while David Bernard Junior took the other wicket for 28 runs off seven overs.

Umar Akmal led Pakistan home with an undefeated 41, while Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Yousuf scored 23 runs each.

Earlier, Nikita Miller struck six fours and one six to top scored for West Indies with 51 from 57 balls to add some respectability to their total.

Only two other West Indies batsmen reached double figures, Darren Sammy made 25 and Devon Smith got 18.

Mohammad Aamer and Umar Gul took three wickets apiece to set Pakistan up for an easy win. However, Pakistan survived an early innings scare and were struggling at 76 for five at one stage before pulling off victory.

West Indies will next face defending champions Australia on Saturday.
