South Africa beat New Zealand
Hosts South Africa recorded a five-wicket victory over New Zealand in Centurion today to get their Champions Trophy quest back on track.
Having lost by 55 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method to Sri Lanka in Tuesday’s opening match, South Africa needed to boost their run rate as it could determine which team advances from Group ‘B’.
South Africa bowled out New Zealand for 214 in the 48th overs with Wayne Parnell the chief destroyer with five for 57 and then reached their target with 53 balls remaining.
The host ended on 217 for five with A.B. de Villiers unbeaten on 70 and Albie Morken 19 not out.
Daryl Tuffey was the most successful bowler for New Zealand with two for 53.
Earlier, Ross Taylor top scored for New Zealand with 72, while Brendon McCallum chipped in with 44.
South Africa returns to Centurion on Sunday for their final group match against England, which plays their opening match against Sri Lanka tomorrow.
