Former Secretary General of the Association of Caribbean States, Professor Norman Girvan, is tipped to be the new United Nations mediator in the border controversy between Guyana and Venezuela.

Professor Girvan will replace Oliver Jackman of Barbados, who died in 2007.

Foreign ministers from Georgetown and Caracas are to meet with UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to discuss the appointment.

While supporting the choice, Guyana\'s Opposition leader Robert Corbin, has questioned whether the foreign minister has the capacity to support Mr Girvan\'s efforts.
