No confidence vote in Manning

The main opposition United National Congress (UNC) in Trinidad and Tobago says it plans to file a motion of no confidence in Prime Minister Patrick Manning.

The move comes as the controversy continues over the decision by a state company to use the courts to stall the Commission of Enquiry into the operations of the Urban Development Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago.

UNC Chairman Vasant Bharath wants the Prime Minister to dismiss the entire board of the corporation after the High Court ruled last weekend that the commission would stop its work until February next year.

The court ruling came despite a statement in Parliament by Attorney General John Jeremie that the proceedings of the commission would not be stayed.

Leader of the Opposition Business in the Senate Wade Mark told reporters that the Prime Minister has an obligation to ensure that there is proper accountability at the level of the state enterprises.
