British Airways has announced plans to cut 1,700 jobs as well as to introduce a two-year pay freeze for cabin crew in a bid to reduce costs in the downturn.

It also announced that it would go ahead with plans to recruit new staff on different terms and conditions than current employees.

The airline is losing money and expects to make a big loss for the second consecutive year.

The airline says the job cuts will involve one thousand cabin crew taking voluntary redundancy and a further three thousand choosing to go part-time.

The changes will take effect at the end of November.

Meanwhile, as of tomorrow British Airways passengers will have to pay a fee of up to ₤60 to choose their seats more than 24 hours before take-off.
