Bangladesh allrounder Shakib Al Hasan has been voted The Wisden Cricketer magazine\'s 2009 world test player of the year.

The award to the 22-year-old, who only made his test debut in 2007, was a rare honor for a nation still struggling to establish itself among the top cricket nations.

Shakib, who led Bangladesh to their first overseas test series victory against West Indies in July, is the first Bangladesh player to win the award.

The award was based on points awarded by Wisden correspondents for tests played between September 2008 and the end of August 2009.

Shakib played eight test matches during this period, claiming 45 wickets with his left-arm spin and scoring 498 runs at an average of 35.57.

Last week, Shakib was named in the International Cricket Council\'s test team of the year along with star players such as Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir of India, A.B. de Villiers of South Africa and Michael Clarke of Australia.
