Dominican Republic and Haiti fight malaria

The leaders of the Dominican Republic and Haiti have agreed to cooperate in a campaign aimed at eradicating malaria from the two-nation island of Hispaniola.

Malaria is spread by mosquitoes.

Former American President Jimmy Carter, who helped to broker the deal, says he’s confident that a constant commitment from the two countries will wipe out the disease.

Some 30 thousand people in Haiti and several thousands more across the border in the Dominican Republic are said to suffer each year from malaria.
