Stanford rejects speedy trial

Despite being ill for his court appearance on Wednesday, Texan financier Sir Allen Stanford has declined a speedy trial in the US$7 billion Ponzi scheme case.

Sir Allen is accused by US authorities of swindling tens of thousands of investors in the alleged massive scheme involving his Antigua based Stanford International Bank.

He’s being held in solitary confinement after he was badly beaten in a brawl by another inmate.

The 59-year-old investor, who was briefly hospitalised last month and underwent surgery for a non-life-threatening aneurysm in his leg, reportedly began spitting blood during a status hearing in Texas.

Sir Allen has been in solitary confinement since he was transferred three weeks ago from a privately run jail in Conroe, Texas, to the Federal Detention Centre in downtown Houston.
