Opposition blames PM’s arrogance for election hold-up

Leader of the main opposition People’s Action Movement (PAM), Lindsay Grant says the “arrogance” of Prime Minister Dr Denzil Douglas is to be blamed for the delay in calling general elections, according to a report on www.cananews.net.

Insisting that there is no legal impediment preventing the Prime Minister from setting the date for the national poll, Grant told supporters at a special party convention Sunday that it was Dr Douglas’s “attempt to cling on to power that caused this country to be in the constitutional crisis as it is right now”.

Last week, Dr Douglas revealed that PAM had filed a fresh injunction, which he said prevented the holding of the general election. He said that the injunction had been sought by Grant and opposition legislator Shawn Richards.

But Grant said the Prime Minister could go ahead and ring the election bell.

In a 107-page judgement, Justice Thomas condemned recent parliamentary manoeuvres made by the government in its bid to realign constituencies in the twin-island federation.

The judge upheld the argument put forward by PAM, through Grant and Richards, that the laying of the Constituency Boundaries Commission report and the issuing of a proclamation to act on the report were unconstitutional since an injunction was already in place.

Grant told supporters that the Prime Minister “can speak from now until the year 3000, that PAM is keeping back the elections.
