The Opposition Leader in Bermuda, Kim Swan, has resigned to force a leadership contest in his United Bermuda Party.

The party has been faced with internal conflict, which triggered the resignation of five of its Members of Parliament.

Mr Swan\'s resignation now paves the way for a formal contest against colleague Bob Richards next Thursday.

The party wants the vote out of the way before the reopening of parliament a day later.
