No more ‘Sir’ for Allen Stanford

There are renewed calls for accused fraudster Sir Allen Stanford to be stripped of the knighthood bestowed on him by Antigua and Barbuda.

The calls rang out yesterday as Antigua marks 28 years of independence.

Stanford was knighted in 2007, but there have been numerous calls for the honour to be revoked on the grounds that his incarceration and prosecution for an alleged investment fraud is bringing Antigua and Barbuda into disrepute.

A group calling itself Concerned Citizens has been chief among those calling for the revocation of Sir Allen’s Knighthood.

In February, Sir Allen, Antigua and Barbuda’s largest private investor, was accused of operating a US$7 billion Ponzi scheme through his Antigua-based Stanford International Bank.

He has been in jail in the United States since June awaiting trial.
