St Kitts working on anti dual citizenship
Legislators in St. Kitts and Nevis will today debate on a new law, barring a dual citizen from being elected to Parliament.
If the law is approved and gazetted, it will require candidates to make a declaration on their citizenship on oath or by affirmation.
The returning officer will administer the oath to the candidate who must pledge that he or she is qualified to be elected a member of the National Assembly.
The law also includes a provision for candidates to declare that they have not, by virtue of their actions pledged allegiance, obedience or adherence to a foreign power or State.
The proposed legislation comes at a time when the people of St Kitts and Nevis are preparing for a general election.
In recent months the issue of dual citizenship has become a major campaign issue in St Kitts.
