Military prosecutors have charged Fort Hood shooting suspect Major Nidal Malik Hasan with 13 counts of premeditated murder.

The 39-year-old man is accused of opening fire at Fort Hood\'s crowded Soldiers Readiness Processing Center, where troops get medical checkups before deployment abroad.

The rampage is described as one of the worst mass shootings on an American military base.

Officials say additional charges may be filed.

They say its not yet confirmed whether Hasan would be charged with a 14th count of murder related to the death of the unborn child of a pregnant victim.

Meanwhile investigators are still trying to determine why Hasan allegedly shot his comrades at the Texas military base.

His relatives have said Hasan, who is of Palestinian descent, wanted to leave the army to avoid being sent to Afghanistan and was harassed by fellow soldiers because of his religion.
