City Council and power company in Guyana at odds

Published:Tuesday | November 17, 2009 | 6:37 PM

The Guyana Power and Light Company and the Georgetown City Council are at odds over the disconnection of electricity at the council.

Yesterday, the electricity company turned off the power supply to the council because of outstanding payments.

The power cut reportedly affected the city’s abattoir, cemetery and incinerator among other services.

The electricity company claims that the council owes it the equivalent of almost US$4 million in unpaid bills.

However, the council has rejected this claim.

The council said the light and power company owes it over US$3 million in rental fees for using the council\'s land.
