Sri Lanka take charge of first Test
Sri Lanka\'s Mahela Jayawardene and Prasanna Jayawardene broke a 72-year-old world record today as hosts India conceded a massive first-innings lead in the first cricket test.
Sri Lanka, who resumed this morning on 591 for 5, declared their first innings at 760 for 7. Thanks to a 351 runs sixth-wicket stand between the Jayawardenes, this earned the visitors a 334 runs lead.
It was the highest innings total ever scored in India in a test innings.
Mahela Jayawardene, who resumed this morning on 204, made 275, while Prasanna Jayawardene, who resumed on 84, was 154 not out when the declaration came.
Zaheer Khan, 2 for 109 and Ishant Sharma, 2 for 135, took most wickets for India.
India, who made 426 in their first innings, were 190 in their second innings at stumps and lost the crucial wicket of first innings centurion Rahul Dravid for 38.
Gautam Gambhir was unbeaten on 74, while nightwatchman Amir Mishra 12 saw off the last 5 overs.
India still trail by 144 runs.
