Announcement of Dominican general election looms

Published:Friday | November 20, 2009 | 9:34 AM

Speculation is rife that Dominica’s Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, will shortly announce the date for the general election, which is constitutionally due in 2010.

Prime Minister Skerrit’s Dominica Labour Party (DLP) won 12 seats in the last general election held in May 2005, while the main opposition United Workers Party won eight seats.

The other seat was won by an independent candidate.

It has been reported that Prime Minister Skerrit has on numerous occasions hinted at the possibility of calling the polls before the constitutional deadline.

In the meantime, political observers say the DLP will face strong opposition in the upcoming general election from the main opposition and a revitalized Dominica Freedom Party.
