Sri Lanka, India battle to draw in first Test

Sachin Tendulkar celebrated his 20th year in Test cricket with a patient unbeaten century today and guided India to a draw against Sri Lanka in the first Test at Motera.



India, who resumed this morning on 190 for 2, wiped out a huge first-innings deficit of 334 runs on the fifth and final day to finish at 412 for 4 in their second innings.



Tendulkar on 100 and V.V.S Laxman on 51 were the batsmen at the crease, when the game was called off. They shared an unbroken partnership of 137.



Gautam Gambhir, who resumed the final day on 74, top scored for India in the second innings with 114.



Rangana Herath was the most successful bowler for Sri Lanka with 2 for 97.



Sri Lanka scored the highest total in a test innings in India when they declared their first innings at 760 for 7 after dismissing India for 426 in the first Innings.



The second test begins at Kanpur on Tuesday.
