English Premier League Round Up

Ex-Portsmouth striker Ricardo Fuller of Jamaica made his old club pay for a missed penalty as he led hosts Stoke to a 1-0 victory in the English Premier League yesterday.

The visitors were the more threatening side but went behind when Fuller curled in a low shot after a well-worked move in the 74th minute.

Before Stoke had taken the lead, Kevin-Prince Boateng saw his tame spot-kick for Portsmouth easily saved by goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen after Rory Delap’s foul on Aruna Dindane.

Stoke are now ninth place in the table with 19 points, while Portsmouth remain at the bottom with seven.

Meanwhile, Jermain Defoe scored five second-half goals as Tottenham humiliated Wigan 9-1 at White Hart Lane to record their highest top-flight win.

Aaron Lennon, Peter Crouch, a Chris Kirkland own goal and Niko Krancjcar accounted for Tottenham’s other four goals.

As a result of the victory, their biggest win in 32 years, Tottenham have moved level on points with third place Arsenal. The teams have 25 points each, eight behind leaders Chelsea United.

In the day’s other game, Blackburn ended a run of 10 successive defeats in the Premier League on the road with a 2-0 win at Bolton.
