Operations at the Bauxite Company of Guyana have been halted indefinitely, following a week long strike by workers.

The union representing the workers, Guyana Bauxite and General Workers Union, was demanding a 10 per cent wage increase.

However, talks between the two parties have been unsuccessful.

The company, which is a subsidiary of the Russian aluminum giant UC RUSAL, had threatened to shut down if the strike continued.

Sixty workers were dismissed last week for engaging in what the company said was unlawful industrial action that resulted in severe economic losses for the United Rusal.
