US Senators want new loans for Antigua to be blocked

US Senators have introduced a resolution to have the Treasury Secretary direct the US representatives at the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) block new loans to Antigua.

The Senators want Washington to oppose any new international loans to Antigua until the island compensates victims of an alleged fraud scheme masterminded by investor Allen Stanford.

They are demanding that the Baldwin Spencer government cooperate with the US and compensate the Stanford investors.

The request comes as Antigua sees help from the IMF to revive its economy, which has taken a battering from the global financial crisis.
