Taliban to intensify fight in Afghanistan

The Taliban have vowed to intensify their fight in Afghanistan, after pledges by the US and its allies to send large reinforcements to the country.

Yesterday US President Barack Obama announced that another 30 thousand American troops would be deployed to Afghanistan.

The reinforcements will take the total number of US troops in Afghanistan to more than 100 thousand.

Defence Secretary Robert Gates also told the US Congress that curbing the Taliban is essential for regional security.

However, according to a Taliban spokesman, such a move will only provoke stronger resistance.

The Taliban also said the US’ hope to control Afghanistan by military means will not become a reality.
