Trade Rep to review EU deal

A US Trade Representative is to review a deal aimed at ending a 16 years banana trade dispute between Latin America and the European Union.

Diplomats involved in the talks have said an agreement to the dispute could be signed today.

Under the new accord, the EU is expected to reduce its tariff on Latin American bananas.

Producers in African, Caribbean and Pacific countries have said any cut in the tariff will place them at a competitive disadvantage in the European market.

However, on Wednesday Trade Ministers from CARICOM and the Dominican Republic (Cariforum) said they were prepared to agree to the EU’s proposal.
