Captain Chris Gayle scored his 11th Test century and first against Australia today to put West Indies in a favourable position at stumps on the fourth day of the second Test in Adelaide.

Gayle ended unbeaten on 155 in a total of 284 for 8, batting with patience but quickly enough to create a lead of 296 and set up a fascinating final day.

On 12 at the start of the day’s play in a total of 23 without loss, Gayle shared 3 vital, successive, half-century stands that fortified West Indies’ position.

He added 72 for the third wicket with fellow left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 61 for the fourth wicket with another left-hander Brendan Nash, and 57 for the fifth wicket with first innings century-maker, Dwayne Bravo.

Chanderpaul scored 27, Nash made 24 and Bravo got 22. All batted for extended periods, but failed to carry on like Gayle.

Fast bowler Mitchell Johnson ended the day as the most successful Australian bowler with 4 for 85. Doug Bollinger supported with 2 for 36.
