PAM pleased with ruling on changes to constituency boundaries
The People’s Action Movement in St. Kitts and Nevis has cited a High Court ruling on changes to constituency boundaries as a major victory for the party and the country.
Yesterday, High Court Judge Francis Belle imposed an injunction on the government to prevent it from implementing recommendations of the Constituency Boundaries Commission until next Monday.
The main opposition and the government have been in the courts for the past several months over the matter.
Prime Minister Denzil Douglas wanted to change the boundaries to some of the country’s constituency, but the opposition has objected to the move.
With the high court ruling, any changes to the constituency boundaries must be approved by the Parliament and then signed into law by the Governor General.
However, with Parliament due to be dissolved next Wednesday, it is now unlikely that any changes will be able to take effect ahead of the next general elections.
Deputy Leader of the People’s Action Movement, Shawn Richards said the ruling puts a stop to plans and makes way for a more free and fair election.
