Health officials in Trinidad and Tobago have launched a free HIV testing programme.

The government which is pushing widespread testing for HIV, says vulnerable groups including homosexuals are now having the tests done.

The free public testing is being done at 23 sites across the country.

One nurse involved in the exercise says the authorities are winning the confidence of high risk groups, with many people turning up for the tests.

Trinidad and Tobago has been able to reduce the number of AIDS-related deaths and new infections in the country.

The government provides free anti-retroviral treatment for persons with HIV/AIDS.
