A one-year-old infant has died in Malawi after a house collapsed in a series of earthquakes and aftershocks in the Northern Karonga district.

Officials say the earthquakes and tremors started in the African country on Sunday.

Police spokesman, Enock Levason said the infant was in the kitchen when the quake struck.

This caused the kitchen, which was made from mud and sticks, to collapse.

Officials say at least six persons have been hospitalized since Sunday.

Several houses remain in rubble or damaged with large cracks to the surfaces.

There are fears that the earthquakes and aftershocks could continue as part of Malawi lies on a fault line, which is prone to earthquakes.
