A woman who reported that she was raped, has been charged with making a false report to the police. Her accusation of being raped has resulted in the arrest of a young man, who is still in police custody, according to a report on www.cananews.net.

Police said that Sharmanda Andrews, 21, has been placed on EC$7,000 (US$2,592) bail and will re-appear in court on December 21.

In October, Andrews claimed that she had been raped by the man, but when the matter came up in court, she did not make an appearance, but wrote a letter to the magistrate indicating that she had made false claims about the rape.

Court officials that if convicted, Andrews could be sentenced to a maximum of five years in jail.
