Grenadian diplomat warns of consequences of climate change

A Grenadian diplomat has warned of the dire consequences for the planet and its people if concrete action to curb the effects of climate change is not taken at a global summit underway in Copenhagen, Denmark.

A major split between developing countries has reportedly emerged at the talks.

Dessima Williams represents the Caribbean nation as the Chair of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS).

Her comments came as richer developing countries opposed demands made by Small Island States members and poor African nations for a legally-binding deal that is tougher than the Kyoto protocol.

The deal is to be agreed on before the end of the two-week meeting.

The richer countries like China, India and South Africa have expressed fear that tougher action will hinder growth in their economies.
