Dozens of criminals are on the run following a jail break in the Philippines.

The National Police Director, Abubakar Tulawie said 31 inmates fled the Basilan provincial jail in Isabela City on the island of Basilan.

He says about 2:00 early Sunday morning approximately 30 gunmen accessed the jail by breaking a wall to the facility.

The National Police Director said the men then went to the cells, where they cut padlocks from each cell, freeing the inmates.

He said a guard and a man who were helping in the escape were killed in the jail break.
