New banana deal

The European Union is said to have finally reached a deal with banana-growing countries to end a decade-long tariff war.

Reports from Brussels indicate that the deal should be signed today.

Under the deal, banana exporters from former European colonies, including those in the Caribbean, will gradually lose much of their long-standing preferential status.

The current conditions have been challenged by banana producers in Latin America and elsewhere.
