Dominican polls challenged

The leader of the opposition, United Workers Party (UWP) in Dominica, Ron Green, has vowed to challenge his loss in the La Plaine constituency following a recount on Saturday.

Green, one of only four UWP candidates to have been declared victors based on preliminary results, now faces the prospect of being out of Parliament for the first time in more than a decade.

A recount on Saturday found that Green had lost to Petter Saint-Jean of the ruling Dominica Labour Party (DLP) by a razor thin margin of two votes.

The reversal means that the DLP has extended its advantage in Parliament to 18 seats to 3 for the UWP.

However, Green says he is not ready to concede defeat to his rival, opting instead to file a file a case in court today.
