Trinidadian man compensated for being wrongly convicted

A Trinidad-born man is reported to have been awarded $3.2 million by the US city of Boston after he was wrongly convicted of rape.

Ulysses Rodriguez Charles spent about 18 years in prison after he was found guilty of raping three women in a city apartment in 1980.

Eight months ago, a state jury in a civil trial declared Mr. Charles innocent.

His lawyer told the Boston Globe newspaper that the city had settled a federal civil rights lawsuit, thus averting a trial.

The paper said federal immigration authorities still intend to deport Mr. Charles to Trinidad because of other criminal convictions.
