Australia defeat Pakistan in first test

Ricky Ponting became the most successful captain in Test history today as Australia’s victory over Pakistan gave him a record 42nd win as skipper.



The host thrashed Pakistan by 170 runs in the first Test in Melbourne to take Ponting past predecessor Steve Waugh.



Nathan Hauritz claimed his maiden five-wicket haul in first-class cricket to guide Australia home on the final day.



Mitchell Johnson struck twice in the first over before Hauritz took 3 wickets to dismiss Pakistan for 251.



Pakistan were chasing a record total of 422 for victory. They resumed this morning on 170 for 3.



Hauritzk ended with 5 for 101, while Johnson took 3 for 46 and Bollinger 2 for 42.



Mohammad Yousuf top scored for Pakistan in the second innings with 61.



Final scores in the match are Australia 454 for 5 declared and 225 for 8 declared, Pakistan 258 and 251.



The second Test begins Saturday in Sydney.
