Cuba water supply problems

Cuban officials are reporting a major wastage of more than half of the water pumped through the country\'s supply network as a result of leaks and breaks in pipes.

According to the Communist party newspaper, Granma, makeshift repairs to the system has not been successful.

It says the country\'s second largest city, Santiago, is the worst hit as some districts are without water for several days.

The newspaper says the authorities plan to overhaul the system, but it could take 10 to 15 years to complete.

Meanwhile, The BBC’s correspondent in Havana says this rare admission of failure may be a pre-cursor to price increases later this year.
