African Cup of Nations organizers says the deadly attack on the Togo team\'s bus could have been avoided if the Togolese federation had made it clear they were traveling to Angola by road.

Tournament organizers issued a statement criticizing Togo for not communicating better with African governing body ahead of the tournament and ignoring directives to travel to Angola by plane.

Suspected separatists in the country\'s far north ambushed the Togo bus on January 8, killing an assistant coach and the team spokesman.

Togo\'s request to be given three days of mourning and to enter the tournament at a later date was then rejected by the African Confederation of Football, a decision that prompted the team to leave

Togo authorities accused the host country and tournament organizers of failing to protect the team in Cabinda, the oil-rich region in northern Angola, which regularly sees outbreaks of violence.
