Federer eases into third round of Australia Open

Top seed Roger Federer of Switzerland eased into the third round of the Australian Open today with a 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 dismantling of Victor Hanescu on Rod Laver Arena.



Federer, a three-time champion, hit 52 winners and was not broken once by his Romanian opponent.



Federer next faces Albert Montanes of Spain, who he has beaten in both previous meetings.



Novak Djokovic, the 2008 champion, was well below his best, as he beat Marco Chiudinelli in four sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3.



Other men’s winners were Nikolay Davydenko, Fernando Verdasco, JO-Wilfried Tsonga, Denis Istomin, Marcos Baghdatis and Lleyton Hewitt.



Defending champion, Serena Williams had no problems beating Petra Kvitova 6-2, 6-1 to move into a third-round match against Carla Suarez Navarro, who ended her sister Venus\' run early at the last Australian Open.



Williams converted 4 of her 11 breakpoint chances against Number 77-ranked Kvitova in a 67-minute match today that followed immediately after Venus Williams beat Austria\'s Sybille Bammer 6-2, 7-5 on Hisense Arena.



Ana Ivanovic, the 2008 Australian Open finalist, extended her run of poor results in a second-round 6-7, 7-5, 6-4 loss to Gisela Dulko of Argentina.



Other women’s winners were Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka, Vera Zvonavera, Agnieszka Radwanska and Li Na.
