St. Kitts election disturbance

Heavily-armed police and soldiers were today called in to restore order in one of the constituencies being contested in the elections, in St Kitts & Nevis.

Angry voters are said to have protested against what they claim were irregularities in the process to elect a new government in the island.

Supporters of the leader of the main opposition People’s Action Movement, Lindsay Grant, contends that persons were brought into the Half-Way-Tree Community Centre, seven miles outside of the capital, to vote.

Grant is up against Glenghost Phillips of the ruling St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party.

Police personnel at the polling station located at the centre, called for support after the voters said they would not accept the situation.

Inclement weather is reportedly threatening to put a damper on the elections in which the Labour Party is seeking an unprecedented fourth consecutive term in office.
