Terrific Cariah guides WI to third in U19 World Cup
West Indies beat Sri Lanka by 4 wickets in their International Cricket Council Under-19 World Cup, third place playoff at the Queen Elizabeth Two Park in New Zealand today.
The Caribbean side was led to victory by Yannic Cariah, who scored a brilliant unbeaten hundred.
After choosing to field, West Indies magnificently responded to Sri Lanka’s 291 for 6 off 50 overs with 294 for 6 off 48.3 overs.
The 17-year-old Cariah stroked 110 not out with 6 fours and 3 sixes. He shared an inspirational century stand with fellow left-hander John Campbell, who scored 77.
Big-hitting Jermaine Blackwood 41 and Shane Dowrich 33 supported with useful runs.
The Sri Lankans had posted their imposing total after openers Denuwan Rajakaruna 94 and Udara Jayasundera 77 staged a massive 174-run first-wicket stand.
Pacer Nelson Bolan with 2 for 74 off 10 overs took most wickets for West Indies. However, leg-spinner Cariah, with 1 for 34 off 9 and pacer Jason Holder, 1 for 48 off 10, were the most economical.
West Indies had lost their semi-final match on Monday to Pakistan, who will play Australia in tomorrow’s final.
