Miners in Guyana have taken protest action to voice their objection against the government\'s plans to strengthen its forest monitoring capability.
Guyana has signed an agreement with Norway that will provide Georgetown with US$250 million over the next five years.
Guyana\'s part of the bargain is to preserve its tropical forests to help combat climate change.
However, the miners are opposed to a proposed six-month wait each time they find a potential gold and diamond bearing concession.
Spokesman Frederick McWilfred says such a waiting period would mean the loss of substantial earnings.
Miners in the south western township have closed their businesses.
The protest has also had an impact on river transportation.
