The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is raising concerns over reports that a shipment of radioactive waste will be passing through the Caribbean Sea on its way to Japan from the United Kingdom.
The Guyana-based CARICOM Secretariat says the shipment posses a risk to the lives and livelihoods of the people of the Caribbean.
CARICOM has not given details as to when the shipment is due to pass through the region.
However, the secretariat is lamenting that the Caribbean Sea should be protected from high-level radioactive waste.
It is also appealing to the relevant authorities to reconsider allowing a shipment of radioactive waste to pass through the region.
