Barbadian union supports wage freeze

One of Barbados’ largest unions says it will support the Government’s proposed wage freeze if the David Thompson-led administration keeps its promise not to lay off workers.
The government has said that it has to look at freezing wages as it seeks to curb expenditure due to a shortfall in revenue collection.
It is also seeking to get civil servants to forego a four per cent increase.
The Secretary General of the National Union of Public Workers, Denis Clarke, says workers are more concerned about keeping their jobs than putting themselves at risk of unemployment by pressing for a wage increase.
