Dominica’s opposition leader controversy

Published:Thursday | February 4, 2010 | 1:00 PM

Dominica\'s opposition leader Ron Green is likely to lose his position as opposition leader when the parliament meets today.

Mr. Green had already lost his parliamentary seat in the December 18 general election.

Mr Green has been insisting that he’s still the opposition leader, and should have been consulted by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit on two key appointments, those of police commissioner and deputy commissioner.

Mr Green\'s argument has the support of retired Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Court of Appeal, Sir Brian Alleyne.

Sir Brian is arguing that Mr. Green was, according to the constitution, still the opposition leader until the parliament meets and he should have been consulted by the prime minister about the appointments.
