US Transportation Department to investigate Toyota

The US Transportation Department has opened an investigation into the model of motorcar manufactured by Toyota that has been found to have malfunctioning brake pedals.

The move follows an admission from Toyota that it had a problem with the brake system of its Prius vehicles, despite earlier saying the issue was rectified in January.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has received 124 reports from drivers complaining of malfunctioning brakes.

The agency says the reports include four crashes.

It says the investigation will look into allegations of momentary losses of braking capability while traveling over uneven road surfaces, potholes or bumps.

However, the agency says despite reports it will not suspend sales of the motorcar.

Toyota has recalled over 5 million of the defective vehicles in the US, United Kingdom, South Africa among other countries, after the malfunctioning break pedals were discovered.
