West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan and world-rated squash player Nicolette Fernandes have been named Guyana’s top sports personalities for 2009.

From voting by a 14-man panel, Sarwan edged distance-running champion Cleveland Forde in the poll for the Sportsman of the Year honour and Fernandes was a clear winner of the Sportswoman of the Year award.

The experienced right-handed batsman, currently out of the West Indies team with a back injury, stroked a career Test best 291 against England in Barbados last may and was also named Cricketer of the Year by the Guyana Cricket Board.

Sarwan had seven votes to top Forde with five votes and world-rated boxer Leon Moore, two votes.

Fernandes, who won her first ever Women’s International Squash Players Association tournament last December at the Greek Open, polled eight votes to defeat distance runner Alika Morgan for the title.

Morgan picked up three votes.
