Four records broken at Eastern Champs

Four records were broken on yesterday’s opening day of the two-day Jamaica National Building Society/Jamaica Public Service-sponsored Eastern Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.



The McKay sisters, Margaret and Tasha of reigning champions Oberlin High School accounted for the first two records.



Margaret posted a meet record five minutes 05.15 seconds to win the Girls’ Class Three 1500 metres, breaking her 2009 mark of five minutes 05.19 seconds.



Tasha accounted for the Girls’ Class One 1500-metre record. She clocked 5 minutes 07.19 to break Glengoffe High’s Crystal Palmer, who also broke the old mark.



Robert Thomas of Paul Bogle High smashed the third record of the day by winning the Boys’ Class One Discus with a throw of 39.01 metre. Second place Roland Carr of Buff Bay also broke the old mark with a throw of 37.90.



Romar Foster of Morant Bay, who won the Boys’ Class Three 100-metre in 11.68, smashed the day’s other record.



Meanwhile, Oberlin High are out front after 19 finals with a combined 149.5 points. They are followed by Buff Bay on 132, Morant Bay on 77.5, Glengoffe on 60.5, Yallahs on 47 and St Mary High on 37.



Today’s final day starts at 9 a.m. with 61 finals.
