Winter Olympics Round Up
Lindsey Vonn won the women\'s downhill gold medal she was widely expected to dominate on day six of the Vancouver Games yesterday, ending days of speculation about her bruised right shin and concern about the bad weather that has plagued the Alpine program.
The 25-year-old American, who won the world championship downhill title last year, beat childhood rival and teammate Julia Mancuso to give the United States a one-two finish in the marquee women\'s Alpine race.
Vonn went out 10th and sped down the Franz\'s Downhill course in 1 minute, 44.19 seconds, 0. 56 seconds ahead of Mancuso. Austria\'s Elisabeth Goergl was next, 1.46 seconds back.
The Alpine program is way behind schedule due to the conditions at Whistler. The men\'s downhill was the only race completed in the opening four days of the Alpine schedule.
Meanwhile, Nikita Kriukov of Russia edged teammate Alexander Panzhinskiy in a photo finish to win the gold medal in the men\'s individual classic cross-country sprint race.
Kriukov won in 3 minutes, 36.3 seconds. The bronze medal went to Petter Northug of Norway, who finished at a whopping 9.2 seconds later.
Marit Bjoergen of Norway finally secured her first Olympic gold by winning the women\'s individual cross-country sprint.
Bjoergen pulled away from Justyna Kowalczyk of Poland and Petra Majdic of Slovenia in a frantic finish to cross the line in 3 minutes, 39.2 seconds.
