Norwegian Marit Bjoergen became the first triple gold medalist of the Vancouver Olympics today, while Whistler\'s problematic weather threw up yet another surprise when German outsider Viktoria Rebensburg won the giant slalom.

Rebensburg, who had never won a major race, had a two-run combined time of 2 minutes, 27.11 seconds in a competition spread over two days because of heavy fog.

Her win gave Germany their eighth gold medal of the Vancouver Olympics, one more than the United States and Canada.

Norway joined the North American teams when they collected their seventh gold medal, Bjoergen anchoring the women\'s 4 by 5-kilometer cross-country relay to victory over Germany and Finland.

Bjoergen, who won the women\'s individual cross-country sprint and the 15-K pursuit, crossed in 55 minutes, 19.5 seconds.
