US crticises T&T on illegal drug trade
The United States is urging several CARICOM governments to beef up their legislation regarding the illegal drug trade as well as track down major narcotics traffickers and dismantle their organisations.
The 2009 Department of State’s International Narcotics Control Strategy Report says drug interdictions in Trinidad and Tobago remained difficult.
It says this was due in part to the lack of effective legislation in combating crime and narco-trafficking.
The US is recommending that Trinidad and Tobago pass court-authorised wiretap legislation to allow for the introduction of the contents of intercepted oral communication as evidence in court for specific crimes.
The report also calls for the establishment of an internal affairs unit to combat internal fraud and bribery and more border patrols on the western side of the island.
