The Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association (JAAA) has announced an increased budget of $61. 9 million to stage the fifth Jamaica International Invitational track meet in May.

The meet, which is one of the earliest outdoor events, on the international track and field calendar, will attract some of the world’s leading athletes.

There is interest coming from American Carmelita Jeter, who ended last season as the second-fastest woman in history over the 100-metre with a 10.64 clocking.

Only Florence Griffith-Joyner has run faster.

JAAA president, Howard Ares said the interest in the sprint events has been very high.

The three-hour Jamaica International Invitational meet will take place at the National Stadium on Saturday, May 1, beginning at 7 p.m.

Already, the JAAA has secured $27 million from the government through the Sports Development Foundation.

Sports Minister Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange announced the government’s commitment during the launch of the meet at the Hilton Kingston Hotel earlier this afternoon.
