CARICOM pushes for development fund for Haiti
CARICOM Heads of Government have said that the regional grouping will be pushing for a development fund to facilitate the reconstruction of earthquake-hit Haiti.
The decision was arrived at during the CARICOM Inter-sessional meeting now on in Dominica.
The Haitian situation and debt relief are among key agenda items at the meeting.
Meanwhile, Guyana’s President Bharrat Jagdeo has blasted developed countries for what he says is their failure to provide sufficient aid to Haiti.
Some international donor agencies have expressed reservations about sending aid to Haiti, claiming that corrupt activies will prevent it from reaching those in need.
However, President Jadgeo has said this is a poor excuse.
He’s suggesting that developed countries help to establish mechanisms that will guard against corrupt activities undermining development aid for Haiti.
